There is no one way to assist people in their healing journey. Share, join, work with us, or just tell a friend. All of the roads will lead you to the same destination: soldiers, veterans, and families in South Sudan who receive the help they need.

Protecting children and youth from the ripple effects of conflict trauma

National Fair Outreach (NFO) operates at the nexus between military mental health and family wellbeing because the trauma experienced by combatants and veterans is not experienced only by them; it impacts their families and children.

Military families in South Sudan experience high mobility and have unique challenges. These are in the form of disruptions in education, tensions between generations, and growing up in homes impacted by unaddressed post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), moral injury, depression, and anxiety. Meanwhile, South Sudanese youth are constantly being framed as an unstable element and a potential threat to peace, rather than as a positive force.

Why This Matters to UNICEF’s Mandate

Where a parent's healing becomes a child's protection

1

Child and Family Protection

Through its support for military families through readjustment counselling and family therapy, NFO takes care of the root cause of stress and harm that comes to the family level.

2

Youth Engagement and Positive Identity

Through its larger community approach, NFO can involve youth in building peace and development activities within the community, making youth be perceived as contributors rather than troublemakers. Also, it is a key component of adolescent and youth initiatives.

3

Prevention of Violence Against Children

The program is directly working on the reduction of harm to women and children in the affected communities. This is because personnel accountability and gender-based violence reduction are key objectives in NFO's MHPSS efforts.

4

Breaking Cycles of Intergenerational Trauma

The family model of treatment for trauma adopted by NFO understands that trauma does not just affect individuals. But it also affects families and communities. We make sure that future generations do not repeat cycles of violence.

Our Track Record

The general counseling services provided by NFO already cover parenting skills and attachment, marriage and family matters, and adolescence-related difficulties in addition to NFO’s specialized military counseling program. NFO is the official NGO partner of SCDVA and MODVA on MHPSS, and was part of the 5th RTNLA SCDVA Workshop on MHPSS (August 2023). The participants identified education, sensitization, and intergenerational as well as inter-community dialogue as crucial elements in building a sustainable culture of peace.

What We Are Seeking from UNICEF

  • A partnership aimed at extending NFO’s family and adjustment counselling services to the children and dependants of the personnel and veterans.
  • A youth-centered peace education and community development component to complement NFO’s MHPSS program.
  • Financial support for the production of outreach materials and training of military families in the states and not just Juba.
