UNDP

There is no one way to assist people in their healing journey. Share, join, work with us, or just tell a friend. All of the roads will lead you to the same destination: soldiers, veterans, and families in South Sudan who receive the help they need.

UNDP

Investing in recovery, reintegration, and institutional resilience

NFO assists with the human side of the recovery of South Sudan by assisting former combatants, veterans, and communities to work through their trauma in order for reintegration, governance, and development to become sustainable.

South Sudan's road from conflict to development is intimately tied to its DDR program and the many individuals who are coming out of cantonment camps and barracks into their communities and new national army roles. Without psychosocial support, this process is extremely fragile, as these individuals come back to their communities still struggling with their unresolved trauma.

Why This Matters to UNDP’s Mandate

Where healing meets the hard work of recovery, reintegration and institution-building

1

DDR and Reintegration

Psychoeducation and counseling prepare individuals for the psychological challenges of reintegration. Thereby preventing relapse into violent patterns.

2

Governance and Institution-Building

NFO's advocacy program helps in developing behavioral health clinics incorporated into the state structure - sustainable infrastructure in the form of public institutions.

3

Community Recovery and Social Cohesion

Our framework directly connects personal healing to the communal level by decreasing intertribal fights, fostering better civil-military relations, and creating communities where youth and returning personnel are perceived as assets and not liabilities.

4

Resilience and Stabilization

The involvement of youth, ex-combatants, and their families is indicative of how NFO's approach aligns with UNDP's community-based stabilization program.

Our Track Record with UNDP

NFO is a registered Psychological and Training Consultancy located in Juba and the official NGO partner of the SCDVA and MODVA for MHPSS. The multi-disciplinary NFO team of legal advisors, psychiatrists, psychologists, clergymen, CSOs, and media professionals has already provided the national dialogue on MHPSS, most recently at the 5th RTNLA SCDVA Workshop (August 2023). This workshop identified the need for a joint platform among the SCDVA, MODVA, and SSDPA to develop a realistic MHPSS program for the period of 2024-2028.

The proposed MHPSS Program will benefit 21,973–29,000 combatants graduating to the Necessary Unified Force and also the veterans and their military families by screening, counseling, psychotherapy, and training of 50 military counselors for deployment to barracks and cantonment areas.

What We Are Seeking from UNDP

  • Funding and technology partnerships for delivering the training of counsellors and reintegration support elements of the MHPSS program.
  • Support for integration of the psychosocial recovery work of the NFO into the larger reintegration, livelihoods and governance work of the UNDP.
  • Joint planning support for a multi-year and multi-state national MHPSS rollout.
